Early Garden

You are never alone in the garden

The worms feel your weight

Robin follows your spade,

Eye out for supper

The worms feel your weight

The robin hops behind you,

Eye out for supper

Twigs above halo’d red, yellow with buds

The robin hops behind you,

Everything is hungering

Twigs above halo’d red, yellow with buds

The clouds scud horizon to horizon

Everything is hungering

Robin follows your spade,

The clouds scud horizon to horizon

You are never alone in the garden

  1. Yes, you are never alone in the garden! What a great picture of that robbin!
I have seen this poetry form pop up a lot in slices. I think I need to explore it a little more!

  2. I’m enjoying the abundance of pantoum slices. This one is so perfect for this time of year too — when, on tail end of a hard winter, we are desperate for signs of spring.

  3. Neat poem. I like that I can read every line more than once! My favorite line was “everything hungering”. It’s evocative, beautiful, and true. We’re all starving for the light and good things to come.

  4. I love how the structure of this poem creates repetition!
You know robins so well. One hops and follows and annoys my husband every time he digs in the front garden! I love all the images in your poem.
Curious….did it flow quickly or did it take time to write this?

    1. I enjoyed trying it out. I like repetition so I like how that is built into a pantoum. The lines came pretty easy but then I worked quite a bit on the order. I kept re-writing them so they might “follow” better in the required pattern. I think some verses work better than others. Think I’ll try it again- there’s more to it than just re-arranging lines 🙂

  5. I love this poetry form, and I loved the idea of not being alone in the garden. Although, now that I think a bit more about that, there are a few things that I really do not want to think about being with me in the garden. Snakes! Spiders!
